Engineered Materials

They're everywhere!

Have you ever looked around and wondered where all of these materials that surround us come from? Not all of these materials, such as wood and iron, came from natural resources. Some of them were designed and manufactured for a specific application. That plastic that houses your computer and the styrofoam that keeps your drink hot are also engineered solid materials.

There are four categories of materials that are engineered for different applications in society. These engineered materials are composites, ceramics, polymers, and metals. In this section you will learn about these materials as well as identify the properties that make them useful.

 Automotive tire
(polymer / metal composite)

Coin
(metal alloys)

Bathroom sink
(ceramics / metals)

Tennis racket
(polymer composites)

Integrated Circuit
(semiconductors / metals)

What do these things have in common?

They are all ENGINEERED SOLID MATERIALS
