This image shows the layers of carbon atoms that make up graphite. The empty spaces between the layers is responsible for the reactivity and lubricating properties of graphite. This picture was obtained using Transmission Electron Microscopy.     This picture shows how the carbon atoms of graphite are arranged on its basal planes, as imaged by Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy.
