This photo shows a single crystal of the mineral apatite (commonly a solid solution of Ca5(PO4)3X, where X = Cl, F, OH).  In geological deposits, this mineral occurs predominantly in it fluoride form.  Its crystals are hexagonal, reflecting how its atoms are arranged.  This mineral plays an important role in bones and teeth.

More information on this mineral can be found in the upcoming module Biominerals on this site.
